Bodegas Paternina was once one of the greatest bodegas in Rioja until it fell into financial difficulties at the end of the 20th century. (Its wines from the 1920s to the 1950s are still great.) The Murúa family, owners of Ollauri, rescued Conde de los Andes, a top Paternina brand. This white wine is made from Viura, from vineyards in Rioja Alta, then fermented and carefully aged in oak barrels, with deft lees contact and then bottle ageing. Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: Powerful while delicate, complex and easily enjoyable. It needs some bottle age to show its full potential, but the subtle texture and long finish are there to prove its class. Sarah Jane Evans MW: A perfumed wine, with white flowers and stone fruit. The palate is equally full, with the promised fruit refreshed by lime zest. Long finish, with minerality and a saline note. Pierre Mansour: Lovely perfume, and a fresh, floral, round palate. Dry, with very good length; still youthful, it has definite ageing potential.
