This southern red comes from the slopes of Mount Yerga (up to 720m), where Garnacha thrives in the bright crisp air. Head winemaker Rodolfo Bastida describes Garnacha as ‘the pessimist’s grape’ in that it will only grow when it is sure to be well drained and often fears drought. That aside, this is a highly aromatic (red and blue fruit, peonies and spice) and approachable wine, from its translucent ruby hue all the way through to its gently herbal finish. Light on its feet yet not without gravitas; this is an exceptionally eloquent statement of intent from Rioja Oriental, once seen as ‘the  poor relation’ in Rioja's sub-regions. Far from it in this case…
