The 2006 is head winemaker Rodolfo Bastida’s favourite vintage. He praises the magnificent balance and the expressive tannins – and it's hard to disagree. From the inviting violet hue to the seductive blackberry and spice aromatics, all the way across the neatly constructed palate, there is class and attention to detail. Aromas of cassis and gravel remind me of Bordeaux, while hints of bitumen and rose recall northern Italy. Finally, the savoury balsamic grip brings us back immediately to Rioja – a Rioja which is, in this instance, at the very top of its game!
