Finca La Emperatriz is situated close to the borders of the Rioja appellation, in one of the coolest areas in the whole region. So much so that a little bit more to the west, vine cultivation is not feasible. It is also at relatively high altitude – almost 600m – which is particularly beneficial for white grape varieties. Grapes for this wine are Viura from poor soils, which were cool-macerated before crushing. Partly fermented and aged in barrels, partly in concrete vats, with lees contact, for 10 months before bottle ageing. Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: Restrained nose, very clean and intriguing. Serious, austere in the mouth, it opens up little by little to a lingering and fruity finish. A wine for connoisseurs, to be drunk with lots of attention. It will last for decades. Sarah Jane Evans MW: A youthful, fresh, vibrant Rioja. Fine interplay between oak and minerality, delivering lovely balance and integration. Pierre Mansour: Restrained aromas, with vibrant, youthful fruit on the palate. Understated yet intense.
