Miguel Merino Jr is one of two key names in Briones (with Miguel Ángel de Gregorio of Finca Allende). These vines, planted in 2001, are not quite as young as the label suggests. In due course, the fruit from three vineyards south of Briones will go into the reserva (I gave the 2016 95 points in the tasting on page XX). In the meantime, this is a polished, dark Rioja, with notes of spice and liquorice.
