One of the few centennial wineries in Rioja, Rioja Vega is indeed one of only four bodegas permitted to include the word Rioja in its brands, because the brand is older than the appellation itself. The winery went through difficult periods. Now, owned by the Navarran group Príncipe de Viana, it is making steps to recover prestige. This is made with Tempranillo Blanco, a mutation of red Tempranillo. Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: Spicy, toasty aromas, with lots of soft ripe fruit, almost tropical. Rich and silky on the palate. A very ambitious wine that lacks a bit of complexity. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Bold aromas of fine oak and lees. Equally oaky on the palate, but this time layered with darts of citrus. Needs time to settle and fully integrate. It has a long, impressive finish. Pierre Mansour: Buttery, intense nose and a complex, creamy, soft palate – nutty too. Lots going on here, accomplished and well-made with super length and class.
