María Sineiro and David Ballesteros started Lagar de Besada in 1988. They make several styles of Albariño from tiny parcels of land including two young wines (one with longer lees ageing, Baladiña, below), an amphora-aged wine and a traditional-method sparkling. Their house style is pure, dry wine, with lower alcohol and vivid acidity. This spends 24 months on lees, followed by 10 years in stainless steel to develop an elegant smoky, briny complexity. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Aromas of asparagus and smoke, reflecting impressive maturity. This is deliciously complex, retaining its minerality and acidity. Pierre Mansour: Lots going on here, with almonds, spice and herby aromas. Incredible structure, beautifully absorbed acidity and flavour, with a long, distinctive finish. Beth Willard: Very fresh and herbal, with garrigue and lemony acidity. Attractive savoury notes on the finish, with green olive and brine, and persistent acidity. Still feels incredibly young.
