Winemaker Pedro Rodriguez comes from a long line of Galician farmers working the steep, terraced slate vineyards above the River Sil, first established by the Romans. Guímaro, which means 'rebel' in Galician, was a nickname given to Pedro's grandfather and the moniker suits this exciting estate, which was one of the first to join the new Ribeira Sacra DO in 1996. Finca Capeliños is made from a single 0.6ha plot of very old Mencía vines (at least 100 years old), hand-harvested, foot-trodden, fermented in open-top foudres and aged for 12 months used French oak barrels. Additional time in bottle has allowed this 2012 vintage to unfurl beautifully; its smooth and elegant palate showing the classic floral and brambly fruit notes of Ribeira Sacra. Still has great freshness, with slatey minerality and a Rhône-like savoury smoky bacon note too. Snap it up if you're lucky enough to find it: only 1,000 bottles were made.
