Miguel Angel maintains that his Calvario bottling is his Burgundy, Aurus his Bordeaux. Sixty-year-old Tempranillo vines from the village of Briones (with 15% Graciano added) have been aged for 24 months in new French oak (from Bordeaux, naturally). A serious nose of lavender, laurel, loganberry and plum gives way to a palate which is concentrated and cerebral. Cassis and graphite recall Bordeaux for sure, but the delicious dark fruit core grounds us firmly in one of the best sites in Rioja.
