‘1985 was one of the best wines I never made,' comments technical director Julio Sáenz. ‘It’s a classic Rioja.’ The colour is clearly evolved. Aromatically there are notes of light spicing, smoke and truffle. The palate is light, deliciously supple and remarkably youthful, with notes of raspberry and vanilla. The keynote citric acidity is beginning, with age, to stand apart. 1985 had 42 months in oak and 5% Mazuelo and Graciano in the blend; today Ardanza has 36 months and no Mazuelo or Graciano.
