Drawing comparisons with Burgundy, Las Beatas is one of Spain's great reds, made by Telmo Rodriguez with fruit from the tiny (1.9ha) Las Beatas vineyard in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. A field blend of nine varieties – including Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Garnacha Blanca – grow on sandstone and marl terraces at 500m-600m. Grapes are hand-picked, fermented in open casks with wild yeast, then spend 14 months in a single 1,200-litre oak foudre, maturing slowly in a very cold cellar. The sixth vintage of this wine, 2016 is made with 60% Tempranillo, lending more richness than previous vintages. That said, it's clearly still evolving, with fine tannins supporting pure black fruit and layers that keep unfolding across the lingering finish. Beautifully poised, with plenty more to come. Only 1,532 bottles produced.
