El3mento is the side-project of Gran Canaria native Carmelo Peña with his winemaker friend Luís Pedro Cândido da Silva in Portugal (Niepoort), aiming to make ‘twin wines’ using the same methodology of using fruit from old vineyards, natural fermentation and long maceration. All El3mento wines are made with whole-bunch pressing and matured in clay amphorae. This 2018 is mostly Listán Negro with small amounts of Listán Prieto and some white grapes from the same vineyard, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Only about 1,000 bottles made. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Typically crunchy entry, then dark mocha notes. A long finish with a lift of spice at the end. It has a grainy texture, which adds interest. An original. Christine Allen: Lovely complexity on the nose, with tomato leaf, sour cherry, mushroom and subtle spice. Lively acidity and well-integrated tannins. Beth Willard: Wet wool, chocolate truffle and volcanic minerality, with developing aromas of barbecue sauce. Crunchy tart red fruit, cranberry and rhubarb. Complex.
