In 2012, Lucinda and Simon Fraser planted a 3.5ha vineyard on their mixed livestock and arable family farm in the Rother valley, East Sussex. They now produce about 10,000 bottles a year from an onsite winery. While their blanc de blancs Chardonnay was new to lead judge Susie Barrie MW, ‘it was so characterful it stopped me in my tracks’, and she gave it one of her top marks. It’s 95% from the 2016 vintage with a splash of oak-aged reserve from 2015, and it spent almost 10 years on lees. Susie Barrie MW: Expressive, honeyed biscuit aromas. A little reductive but beautifully balanced, with layers and layers of flavour. What a wine! Matt Hodgson: Sweet and sour lemon mingled with red apple and cream. The palate is driven by the acidity to a tangy finish. Dror Nativ MW: Buttercream, roasted hazelnut, green apple, citrus blossom. Complex, with the structure to develop further.
