This year sees the 10th anniversary of Ruth and Charles Simpsons’ first vintage from their Kentish winery in Barham, near Canterbury, the only one in the UK with a helter-skelter slide. This aside, wine is a serious business for the Simpsons, who produce a range of still and sparkling wines from their 38ha estate on the chalky North Downs. As the name suggests, this magnum is aged for 24 months on lees (as opposed to 15-18 months for the 75cl format), and a further 12 months under cork before release. Susie Barrie MW: Mid-gold. Engaging toasted nut and truffle aromas. Dry and savoury but generous with layers of complexity. A little smoky, too, in a hedonistic way. Matt Hodgson: Reductive, shortbread nose. Sweet Williams pear and nutmeg, with a sweet finish, but good length. Dror Nativ MW: Very fine bubbles. Classy nose of biscuit and toasted almonds. A toasty, creamy finish. Harmony and depth.
