For the suggested retail price of $150 USD, I expected to be quite taken by this wine. It is certainly a serious rosé, with a medium-bodied, weighty generosity and an enviable through-line of saline-acid tension and salty minerality that makes for an intriguing sip. I was left wanting a bit more from the aromatics, which, like the palate, are delicately flavoured and redolent of just-ripe strawberry, pomegranate, and grapefruit. On the palate, those flavours are more silky. Overall, it is a well-crafted rosé. Whether it is worth the asking price is, ultimately, up to you, dear reader. It is, however, a thoroughly satisfying sipper. This new wine is a collaboration between Ashley Hepworth (formerly of Joseph Phelps), Molly Hill (formerly of Sequoia Grove), and Sally Johnson Blum (formerly of Pride Mountain Vineyards and St. Francis Winery). It is made from old-vine Grenache (Alban Clone D) sourced from Mt. Veeder’s Paras Vineyard, where the grapes grow in decomposed shale and loam soils at 360 metres. The wine was whole-cluster pressed and fermented in concrete, French oak, and stainless steel, then aged on fine lees.
