The story behind Variation One dates back to 1997, when John Konsgaard received four bins of Syrah. One of his interns accidentally spilled half of it across the winery floor, leaving him with just two bins — not enough for a single-varietal bottling. Instead, he decided to blend the remaining juice into a lot of Merlot. He liked the result and chose to continue the tradition. In this vintage, with just 231 cases produced, the wine blends 60% Syrah and 40% Merlot from Hudson Vineyards in Napa/Carneros and was aged for 20 months in French oak (34% new). The wine is ultra-perfumed in a Syrah-driven style, showing purple and dark fruit, loamy earth, and rich Asian spice. Robust tannins frame this pleasure-packed expression, with layered blue-fruit nuances emerging on the finish. It is utterly captivating and dynamic in its seamless marriage of opposites.
