Produced from Wente clone Chardonnay grown at Ritchie Vineyard (originally planted in 1972 on AXR1 rootstock, the winery’s namesake), this wine is cropped at just 1.5 tonnes per acre (approximately 3.4 tonnes per hectare). Seeing Ritchie Vineyard on a label is enough to excite on its own, but with Jean Hoefliger at the helm, expectations rise further. His assured handling of the fruit, from hens-and-chicks through fermentation to élevage, results in a complex, multidimensional, and highly compelling wine. It shows a measured richness expressed through lemon and tangerine oil (likely derived from skin contact), building in the glass with layers of lemon, lime, apple, and apricot, underpinned by a subtle beeswax note. Concentrated yet light on its feet, it finishes long and refined, with mineral freshness and lifted floral nuances.
