Bell Wine Cellars grew from Stellenbosch-raised Anthony Bell’s research into Cabernet Sauvignon clones and more than three decades of Napa Valley winemaking, including 15 years at Beaulieu Vineyard. Today, winemaker John Hazak carries that work forward at the family-owned Yountville winery. Sonnette 2023 is led by 61% Merlot, joined by 19% Petit Verdot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. It was aged for 20 months in French oak, 60% new. Jonathan Cristaldi: Savoury style, with dark loamy earth, graphite and pressed wild flowers, a subtle kiss of spearmint and firm tannins on a moderate finish. Jenica Flippo: Pleasing black and red fruits mingle with graphite, gentle herbal notes and dried flowers. Silky tannins linger gracefully. Cara Patricia: Petit Verdot stands out in this mostly-Merlot blend: big tannin and dark black fruit with coffee and stewed plum.
