The 2023 Proprietary Red Wine is bold, powerful, robust, and quite enticing, offering a host of baking spice notes layered with red and black berry fruits, graphite minerality, and toasted cedarwood accented by dark cacao. Hints of chicory and redwood bark add further complexity, framed by rich, ripe tannins that build through a full-bodied finish. Winemaker Nigel Kinsman allows 25–35 days on the skins following a week of cold soaking, with fermentations that run quite warm, seeking an ideal balance of extraction and integration. The Proprietary Red is aged 22 months in roughly 65% new French oak. Bella Oaks is owned by Suzanne Deal Booth, with Kinsman as winemaker and with this vintage, the late Michel Rolland serving as consulting winemaker.
