Illustration is Blackbird Vineyards’ Merlot-focused wine, one of its principal bottlings alongside Paramour and Contrarian. Crafted by winemaker Aaron Pott, the blend is sourced from top sites in Rutherford, with Cabernet Franc from Yountville and Cabernet Sauvignon from Bird’s Nest on Hennessy Ridge and the Black Sears property on Howell Mountain. The wine undergoes native yeast fermentation in stainless steel before ageing for 20 months in approximately 50% new French oak. In 2023, it shows a beautifully Merlot-driven character, offering black cherry and plum fruit that come together harmoniously on the mid-palate, underpinned by fine-grained tannins that build across the palate. The wine is immeasurably fresh and inviting, supported by vibrant acidity, with nuances of cedarwood, crushed cocoa nib, and violets on a lovely finish.
