The Carex 2023 is a Chardonnay that leans toward the more restrained side, where acidity and minerality lead the way. The grapes come from the DuMOL Estate Vineyard in Occidental, planted at high density to Hyde and Wente clones - two workhorses of Sonoma Chardonnay. Winemaker John Raytek is a fan of early picking and harvests this site about ten days before his other sources, which, in a cold, late vintage like 2023, allows acidity to really show off. Bright, light greenish yellow in the glass, it opens with aromas of lime and white flowers before a flinty, reductive edge cuts through everything. The palate arrives tight but energetic, with a dusty mineral grip and a long finish that lingers well beyond the last sip. A wine likely to develop in quite interesting ways over many years.
