This limited-production Cabernet is heaven-sent for fans of fresh, savoury iterations of Napa's signature grape. A Napa throwback that shows that the place can still produce beautiful wines at 12.5% abv. There are pungent and alluring aromatics of crushed violets turned earth and ember. The palate is so complex and refreshing. Savoury herbaceous intrigue comes from notes of chicory, wild anise, desert scrub, green and white peppercorn and pine sap. Fruit appears throughout with wild mountain berries, cassis and blood orange, providing a spicy freshness and a rich umami character derived from soy and wild mushroom flavours. The wine is amply structured, with generous tannin that balances its fresh approachability. I would love to taste it again in 10 or 15 years. For under $50, it's a bottle I'd reach for over Napa Cabernets, many that are 4-10x its price.
