The 1979 vintage was challenging, with a heat spike that shut down the vines and delayed the Cabernet's maturation. This bottling is pungent and hedonistic – the perfect pairing with dessert. Full-bodied, but the fruit and oak tannins are so well resolved that the wine now has a texture like cream. There’s an element of melted chocolate and prune flavours – perhaps a whisper of the valley’s previous orchards before the vines took over? Bernard Portet introduced the wine and mentioned the coolness of this pocket of the Napa Valley. He believes it allows winemakers to achieve intensity, colour, structure, great body and a long ‘rugby ball’ finish: one that enters, opens on the palate, funnels to the back of the mouth then bounces back!
