Winemaker Chris Phelps, who produces single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Sleeping Lady Vineyard in Yountville for his Ad Vivum label, started COIL as a project with his son, winemaker Josh Phelps of Grounded Wine Co. The COIL label offers father and son the chance to work together on something they're passionate about. Their first experiment was with Pinot Noir from the stunning Signal Ridge Vineyard in the Mendocino Ridge AVA, and is now a wine they will make every year fruit is available from that site. The Pinots are pure elegance. In 2022, however, they secured grapes from the Sangiacomo Roberts Road Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap of the Sonoma Coast AVA. The young wine is made in a reductive style, so after the high-toned flinty notes dissipate with some swirling, what remains in the glass is a harmonic symphony of lyrical Chardonnay aromas and flavours that are deeply compelling. Fantastic orchard fruit notes intermix with wet stone, a hint of liquorice, and a kiss of fresh herbs. Multifaceted flavours of lemon curd, candied apricot, and dried pineapple resonate through the long finish of toasted hazelnuts and caramel cream. Weighty without an overbearing richness, brightened by expressive saline minerals and a firm spine of racy acidity. A classic, young Chardonnay with miles and miles to go. Number two of my top 10 wines of 2023.
