The Atchley Vineyard-designated Correlation Cabernet tells the story of a 5-acre site at the top of Spring Mountain that was an old hippie commune in the late 1960s, planted by a doctor from San Francisco. Eventually, Steffens and his team at Vineyard 7&8 took over farming and leased the fruit, and had worked with the vineyard since 2008. The 2023 release is the last vintage they worked with this fruit, before it was sold to Graeme MacDonald. Adjacent to the Vineyard 7&8 estate on Spring Mountain, all the fruit comes from the Atchley Vineyard. A blend of Clone 7 and Clone 8 (anyone see the irony there?) Fermentation is in stainless steel, the wine is then racked to barrel and aged for 26 months in 70% new French oak. This wine has that signature Spring Mountain garrigue, a minty, herbal, crushed sage freshness, with unsweetened cocoa powder notes, and dark fruit character. Full-bodied, framed by palate-saturating lush fruit notes underscored by a fine-powdery, expressive tannic base that is ultra-granular and coats the palate with a velvety appeal that carries this wine to the lengthy, building tannin and crushed graphite mineral finish.
