“For me,” says Wes Steffens, “there’s a huge movement around rosé production in Napa, but I wanted to craft something as traditional as possible given where we are.” With Provence as his stylistic benchmark—aiming for texture, dimension, and balance—he employs a quick saignée on the day he’s making red wine, allowing for minimal skin contact. The wine is treated similarly to Sauvignon Blanc, undergoing fermentation in neutral oak, followed by six months of ageing in the same neutral barrels. No malolactic fermenation. The nose is super expressive and rich, layered with savoury high-toned sage and grapefruit zest. Bright acidity anchors the palate, which shows a gentle tannic grip and elegant red berry fruit, along with subtle hints of guava and underripe pineapple. Nuances of umami complexity and lift to the finish.
