In honour of the many old Zinfandel vineyards that were overlooked for decades in Sonoma County, DeLoach’s Forgotten Vines blend brings together fruit from several heritage sites first planted in the late 1800s and early 1900s in the warmer reaches of the region. Originally planted as field blends, Zinfandel is the dominant variety, though Petite Sirah, Carignane, Alicante Bouschet, and occasional native varieties are also interplanted throughout the vineyards. Each site is harvested separately and vinified individually, remaining separate through fermentation and ageing until the final Forgotten Vines blend is assembled. The first vintage was 2004. Aromatically, the wine is lifted and expressive, with high-toned violet notes and brambly red berry fruit accented by graphite nuances. Rich, toasty oak adds depth without overwhelming, while the palate shows more structure and length than expected, sitting comfortably between medium- and full-bodied. Bright, well-integrated acidity carries the alcohol with ease and drives the wine through a long, satisfying finish.
