DeLoach has worked with this fruit since 2004 and has produced a vineyard-designate bottling every year since, with the sole exception of 2020. ‘To me, Van der Kamp is special,’ says Brian Maloney. ‘It contains some of the oldest clonal selections in the county, including La Tâche and Swan, and it has been an incredible place for me to learn.’ The site wraps around Sonoma Mountain and is farmed across three distinct sections, each marked by a gradual shift in soil type. This allows for multiple picking windows as the soils transition from heavier to lighter, offering clear differences in flavour expression. For Maloney, the focus here is on herbaceous and savoury elements, supported by a firmer tannin profile that rewards ageing. He often likens the tannins to Nebbiolo in character—there is real tension and firmness, framed by dark berry fruit and rich loamy earth. The long finish is driven by layered, savoury herbal complexity and taut, tension-filled tannins. This is a finely balanced wine defined by energy, structure, and restraint.
