Gravelly Meadow is a 1.5-hectare estate vineyard on Diamond Mountain, now owned by the Rouzaud family of Maison Louis Roederer. The site sits along an ancient riverbed. A blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is fermented in small open-top fermenters, with a cold soak followed by gentle extraction of up to 21 days on skins. It is aged for 19 months in nearly 75% new French oak, then held a further year in bottle before release. There is striking mineral intensity running through the wine despite the warmth of the vintage. Harvest took place at the end of September, after the heat wave had subsided, and you would be hard pressed to detect any heat influence beyond slightly riper fruit tones touched with cinnamon spice. Fine-grained tannins, notable tension, and impressive freshness carry through a long, poised finish.
