Tasting the Donelan Syrahs side by side makes picking favourites almost impossible. I struggled to identify my top pick between Judge and Cuvee Keltie, and this Judge eeked out an extra point because three days after opening the bottle, the wine in my glass was still as delicious and fresh as it was on day one. Talk about an impressive feat! A full-bodied, intensely aromatic Syrah with bright huckleberry fruit, coffee bean and toffee notes, nuanced by creme de cassis, green tobacco, white pepper, sage, and purple floral highlights. Enticingly sweet boysenberry fruit and blueberry compote are deeply penetrating and lasting. Sculpted tannins billow with intensity and a profoundly toasty cedar-like quality before resolving with mocha spices, pepper-rich charcuterie, and candied violets. The finish lasts for over a full minute.
