This Kobler Family Vineyard Syrah is co-fermented with 9% Viognier, native fermented with 35% whole cluster, and aged 17 months in entirely neutral oak. The wine is impressively focused, characteristically tight, and needs air upon opening. Give it time to breathe, and then let the fireworks begin. Gorgeous red berry fruit with rose petal florals and a pop of Sichuan pepper melds with bramble nuances, blue-skinned fruit, and violets. This vintage required clipping the shoulders of the Syrah bunches due to late-season heat causing desiccation, but the extra effort truly paid off. The tannins are super fine, with a unique floral quality reminiscent of rose stems, all framed by a firm spine of acidity. The crunchy red fruit expands beautifully on the palate, building with notes of white pepper and delectable cedarwood. As I’ve said before, hold onto these wines as long as possible—they will mature and develop gracefully over the next two decades. They’re also wonderful to enjoy over several days; leave the bottle on the counter with the cork in and savour the wine’s evolution. Proprietor Joe Donelan loves the wines of Côte Rôtie. He calls them his 'magic carpet ride' and adds that he draws Syrah inspiration from Rene Rostaing's wines.
