This is such a fun, easy, and delicious wine. Alder Springs in Mendocino is clearly where Trousseau loves to grow in California; the high elevation and rugged conditions are delivering some incredible wines from that site, and this one is no different. The wine is made with two different clones handled in a specific split: Clone 10 undergoes a full 30-day carbonic maceration, which brings out those earthy, mushroomy, and slightly funky notes, while Clone 3 is entirely destemmed to highlight a bright red fruit character. The rest of the winemaking is almost entirely hands-off - native yeast and no added sulfur - followed by a short six-month elevage in neutral oak. The result is a light ruby wine, slightly cloudy in the glass, but incredibly approachable. The fruit is upfront, supported by very soft tannins and a savory, umami note on the finish. It is a clean, low-intervention wine that feels very much alive. Only 200 cases produced.
