First planted in 1860, Montecillo is among the oldest and most storied vineyards in the Moon Mountain District. Its rugged, terraced plantings of old Cabernet Sauvignon selections sit on red, rocky volcanic soils – basalt and clay – and are organically dry-farmed. Deep-coloured in the glass, it has a gravelly, mineral character, with red and dark fruit, a touch of citrus and spice. The flavours turn herbal, like bay laurel, and lightly savoury, with plum skins and a note of oak spice from 12 months in 40% new French oak and a further 12 in a 2,000-litre Austrian cask. There's a real elegant structure, with fine, powdery tannins and a lifted acidity carrying a long finish.
