The 2022 Whitney’s Vineyard Chardonnay from Fisher is even more rich and opulent than the 2021, with striking grilled oyster shell aromatics and flavours that intermix with apricot jam and grapefruit zest. A framework of vanilla-scented toasty oak and brioche supports layers of tangerine and citrus peel. Softer in profile than the 2021, this vintage offers a heartier texture and greater depth of flavour. First planted in 1973 to Old Wente clone Chardonnay, Whitney’s Vineyard lies at 305 metres elevation on a gravelly, gently sloping, south-west-facing hillside. Owing to its mountain heritage and low-nutrient soils, the site produces tiny clusters of tightly packed ‘hens and chicks’ (berries of varying size). It was replanted in two phases with increased vine density, establishing new vines in 2013 and 2016, all grafted to original clonal material.
