The 2012 vintage heralded the change to warmer, drier conditions. Most of the rain – 30cm – fell in March which meant a lot of disease pressure, 'but from a winemaker's perspective it was like a breath of fresh air, with a generous crop and wines that virtually made themselves' says Cakebread. 'It was easy; no effort. It's a luxury to have a vintage like that.' This is a firm but juicy Cabernet with supple yet dusty tannins and great concentration of opulent bramble fruit allied with spicy oak. It has a grippy, textural palate with lovely freshness on the finish. 20 months in 65%-75% new French oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered in July 2014. 391 cases made.
