Grand Napa’s Calculated Risk is something of an outlier in the vintage, showing the medium-bodied, lightweight character of the cool season but not the ripe, pure fruit. It does have a nice aromatic lift courtesy of a minty freshness and red-currant notes. Sappy tannins build with a crisp edge, while savoury oolong tea aromatics emerge on the palate – suggesting the fruit may have been picked a touch early. Still, it’s an intriguing and food-friendly Cabernet, best paired with herb-dusted pork loin or a kale salad topped with slices of blood orange.
