Though the 1988 growing season was difficult, marked by turbulent weather and storms in Napa, the wine is in excellent condition. The nose reveals a complex, delightful wine with notes of charcuterie, dusty minerals, dried sage, and graphite. It possesses a medium-bodied richness that builds on the palate with juicy black cherry, dusty tobacco, and fragrant minerality. Long, focused, and still quite fresh, this is one to enjoy now and continue to hold. Sampled during a vertical tasting of Groth wines (1982–2022) in early 2024 with proprietor Dennis Groth and winemaker Ted Henry, though it was Nils Venge who made the 1988 Groth Cabernet.
