The 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was released at $25, offered 6-8 months later than the 1985 Napa Cabernet. It still displays a profound nose. As Dennis Groth recalls, ‘It was really drinkable on release—big nose, and big fruit, but had balance.’ Today, it continues to possess a hedonistic bouquet with rich notes of toffee, caramel, dried wild herbs, and blackcurrant. Medium to full-bodied, it retains a touch of heat, black tea tannins, and wonderful ironstone minerality. The finish is long and lacy, offering a very generous expression. Sampled during a vertical tasting of Groth wines (1982–2022) in early 2024 with proprietor Dennis Groth. The winemaker in 1985 was Nils Venge. This wine will continue to impress for another decade at least.
