This is a special wine from the oldest continuously producing Pinot Noir vineyard in North America, planted in 1953 in the volcanic soils of the Moon Mountain District, above Sonoma Valley. Deep ruby with a slight purple hue, it opens cleanly, with a striking combination of cooking-herb aromas – thyme, bay leaf and a savoury, reduction-like depth that reminds me of boeuf bourguignon – over a subtle lift of bright tart raspberry and citrus that unfolds slowly. It tastes focused, with a tart pomegranate-juice and pluot character threaded with a spicy, mineral edge. Medium-bodied, with very bright acidity and soft, fine tannins, with 10 months in 33% new French oak. The aromas and flavours are incredibly pronounced and evolve in the glass quickly. A fantastic and very seductive wine.
