For Carlton McCoy, this wine recalls some of the exceptional Cornas Syrahs that he admires. Regardless of comparison, this stands as one of the most stylish and structured expressions of Syrah in Napa today. A playful and yet also serious cool-climate interpretation, the wine sees up to 20% new French oak, 100% whole-bunch fermentation, and no sulphur addition until bottling. The Haynes Vineyard Syrah vines, planted in 1996 and 2000, are aged in 500-litre neutral oak barrels and 1,500-litre casks. The aromatics evoke a walk through wild woodland over stony ground, and present with remarkable freshness and lift. There is a pure earthy element, reminiscent of freshly exposed roots and damp stone. The palate reveals white pepper, cherry and macerated blackberry fruit layered with wild spice, blood orange, exotic floral tones, violets, and crushed stones. The wine is striking for both its beauty and freshness, delivering energy and structure in equal measure. A compelling and distinctive Syrah, it offers a fascinating counterpoint for collectors accustomed to richer Napa expressions, and is a remarkable wine by any measure.
