Fruit is from Trailside Vineyard in the eastern foothills of Rutherford, just north of Mumm and south of Conn Creek. Heitz purchased the initial portion of the property in 1986 and later expanded the estate in 2019 with the acquisition of a 34-hectare parcel and the incorporation of a contiguous 20 hectares to the south, formerly known as Wildwood, creating a fully contiguous vineyard site. The wine shows pure black fruit and graphite notes, with a rusticity to the tannins reminiscent of fine Barolo, infused with dried wild herbs and spices. Those building tannins carry through a lengthy, full-bodied palate that remains expressive, fresh, and beautifully structured through the finish. It has the lomay earth quality of the 2021 vintage in spades. Aged in upright casks for the first nine months of its life, followed by maturation in 90–95% new French oak for the remainder of its barrel ageing. Winemaker Brittany Sherwood employs cool fermentations, early pressing, and an extended élevage, noting that Heitz also utilises a small amount of Limousin oak foudre, which typically requires longer ageing for full integration.
