The Hundred Acre Fortification wines are typically crafted as blends of select barrels, and the previous releases I rated (the 2016s) were so distinct that Jayson Woodbridge bottled four single-barrel renditions, each named on the label as ‘Barrel One,’ ‘Barrel Two,’ and so forth. In 2018, just one barrel was produced. The base wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fortified with a ten-to-one fractal distillation of Cabernet Sauvignon spirit—distilled in Atlantic copper stills to capture only the heart of the hearts. Hundred Acre’s 2018 Fortification is everything you’d hope for: super lush and brooding, with dark cherry, walnut liqueur, currant, and fig compote, alongside blueberry jam and sumptuous loamy earth. The texture is muscular and deeply vinous, with cocoa-powder tannins and a finish that lingers luxuriously between sips. This is your “end-of-the-night” wine—the one you pour when the cigars come out and the conversation drifts to stories of your younger days, before there were bills to pay.
