While you might not think of Assyrtiko as coming from California (you'd expect this to be a wine from Greece), the grape is growing in the Suisun Valley, east of Napa. In the glass, it offers the kind of aromatics you'd expect from Sauvignon Blanc, with citrus, orchard, and even tropical fruit notes, but with a rich nuttiness and a full palate expression, similar to that of a leaner Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. But that nuttiness is layered with wildflowers, and, mingling with orchard fruit, evokes the scent of chilled chamomile tea. I like this a lot and suggest it for salads with nuts and cheese, or as a complement to Dover Sole and creamy mashed potatoes.
