Winemaker Ryan Knoth took the reins in 2023. The first winemaker for Joseph Phelps, Walter Schug, had planted a few acres of Scheurebe, an aromatic white grape variety from Germany, which, until the 2023 vintage, had been destined for the Delice dessert wine. Grapes were harvested in three passes to achieve ideal acidity, ripeness, and phenolic development. The grapes were then whole-cluster pressed in a Crémant-style, with minimal turning, and stems were retained for structure. They were then fermented and aged in stainless steel and neutral puncheons. The result is texturally extravagant, offering a firm grip and vibrancy. Aromas burst with citrus and orchard fruit, white flowers, and a waxy honeycomb nuance. Layers of crushed almonds and delicate wildflower waft through, underpinned by salinity and electric acid tension. The palate finishes long and persistent, a gorgeous expression of rarity and sophistication. This rare Napa bottling beautifully highlights its intense aromatics and textural finesse.
