A blend of 64% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, and 6% Counoise, sourced from Goldbud Vineyard in El Dorado County, a site defined by powdery red Aiken soils scattered with lava cobbles. The vineyard is owned by Ron Mansfield of Lava Cap, who is also a grower of stone fruit. The wines were fermented in stainless steel and aged for 17 months in large-format neutral barrels (demi-muids). ‘All that soft soil really comes out in the texture of the wine,’ says Keplinger. Indeed, the wine is wonderfully soft, with an ultra-fine, granular texture that feels super-velvety on the palate. Lovely mixed-berry fruit and subtle rose-petal notes lift from the glass, joined by delicate espresso-bean nuances and an appealing array of brown baking spices—paprika, cumin, coriander, and cinnamon. Very delicate and very lovely, finishing with a fine cocoa-powder note. The tannins are ultra-powdery, and the fruit remains juicy and fresh throughout.
