Old-vine Estrella clone Syrah from a volcanic, north-facing slope in Truchard Vineyard, Carneros. This is a wild wine—totally feral—brimming with pure black cherry fruit layered with olive tapenade and beautifully perfumed notes of violets and rose hips. All of it comes together on an impressively silky palate, delivering terrific density and almost unimaginable length. It’s so pretty, so delicious, and remarkably fresh, succulent, and seductive. Fermented in stainless steel, and then aged in puncheons and 228-litre Burgundian barrels with just about 30% new French oak for 17 months. That regimen just helps maintain the freshness and lifts the wine.
