Zio Tony Vineyard Chardonnay is super expressive and absolutely riveting, supercharged with electric acid tension. Old Wente clones planted on AXR rootstock are trained on an old lyre trellis that allows the clusters to hang in dappled sunlight, and on Goldridge soils the wine is about as expressive as California Chardonnay can be. There’s very little new oak on this barrel-fermented Chardonnay. For all its freshness and tension, the wine delivers gorgeous, ripe apple fruit and subtle stone-fruit character, lifted by a squeeze of bright lemon, candied lemon peel, and a hint of ginger spice. All that mineral drive and freshness re-emerge on the long, lingering finish, marked by crushed, salty Marcona almonds.
