The Petite Sirah comes from The Chase Vineyard in Redwood Valley, Mendocino. Nigel Kinsman tells me the vineyard’s owner urged him to visit for eight years before he finally made the trip; and when he did, he was bowled over. The vines are more than 80 years old, planted by the owner’s grandfather in Mendocino County near Ukiah. This is a wine that is hard to resist, even as a professional taster, and as a consumer, it goes down so easily it may well make you dance in your seat. You might want to have a second bottle on hand. The wine disappears quickly, thanks to its silky, suave, and polished expression of dark blue and black fruit layered with spice-box notes, length, tension, and generosity.
