A darker, more brooding and muscular expression of Barbera, this ‘Tectonic Series’ label represents a barrel selection of what the winery considers its most ageworthy fruit. Sourced from the same two sites as the Tectonic Zinfandel—one at 915 metres and the other at 730 metres in the El Dorado AVA—it was aged for 18 months in neutral French oak. Boysenberry fruit mingles with espresso bean, toasty oak spice, liquorice and wild fennel. Medium-to-full-bodied, the tannins are powerful and beam-like, bearing down on the darker-toned fruit and spice notes with real intensity. Tension-filled and resonant, and with alcohol at 15.6%, the wine remains balanced and not hot on the finish. It is best served alongside pulled pork, hearty meat-based pastas or grilled fare.
