The vines for the white were grafted over from Cabernet Sauvignon to Sauvignon Blanc in 2020 — a somewhat wild move for a Napa estate, but one that made perfect sense for the site and has proven well worth the effort. Winemaker Matt Sands explains that while vines planted higher up on the estate suit red varieties, the lower portion of the site, with its cooler conditions, is far better suited to whites. The wine shows a wonderfully grippy texture with lifted aromatics of citrus and bright lemon fruit, layered with a pop of vanilla and delicate white jasmine notes. Tension carries the wine through the palate, finishing long with a gentle baking spice character. The wine is 100% barrel fermented and aged 18 months in French oak, 60% neutral barrels (60-gallon Ermitage) and 40% new French barrels (Sylvain Blanc and Ermitage LT).
